Other Characters: Sora Shiunin (Nephilim)
CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Crash Bandicoot
Age: Unknown, physically approx. 17- 20+ years old
Canon: Crash Bandicoot (N.Sane Timeline)
Canon Point: Post Crash 4: IAT
Character Information: Wiki here
Note: According to both the word of developers and in-game evidence, the "N.Sane" timeline of the series starts with the remastered events of the original trilogy, followed by "It’s About Time."
Therefore, all examples will be derived from strictly within these four games.
Personality:
First and foremost, Crash Bandicoot is as goofy as he looks and suffers the same clumsy, bad luck as a wacky cartoon. Most of the time, he has a gigantic grin on his face, showing that this mutated marsupial loves the majority of the thrill within his adventures as much as he loves to sleep. We can see one example in how he takes to rail grinding (aka "soaping" during the '90s) like a dog loves riding in a car- complete with his tongue waggling in the wind.
But that doesn’t mean Crash is always so cool under pressure. He’s visibly nervous while tromping through the creepy spider-ridden ruins during his trek to N. Sanity Peak and understandably panicked while frantically running from perils such as boulders, mechanical “Doom Rigs,” and dinosaurs. He’s not an adrenaline junkie for near-death situations, able to recognize when a situation is better to run from versus standing his ground to dodge and weave.
Despite his streak of amusing bad luck, Crash bounces back from these heart-stopping perils without faltering at enjoying life to the fullest. No matter how bad things get, he pulls through and always makes time to celebrate with a B-Boy spin or his signature and silly "Crash dance" (that sometimes includes pelvic thrusting).
As much as Crash doesn’t seek out whatever life throws at him, he doesn’t always do a good job at avoiding trouble. His actions are uninhibited, not always thought through. During his quest to rescue Tawna from Dr. Neo Cortex, one of his escapades included riding a hog through a tribesman village, where he distinctly makes a mischievous eyebrow wiggle before it all starts.
Crash also owns a pet polar bear cub named "Polar" after escaping from an angry adult polar bear... presumably one of the cub’s parents.
He's matured a little by the time of his inter-dimensional travels alongside Coco, assuming she's not keeping a metaphorical leash on him. Chaos tends to find Crash more often than he runs off to cause it. However, he still struggles to show caution or heed advice from his companions. His encounter with the unknown eldritch creature lurking within N. Sanity Peak might have been avoidable if he’d been warier about his surroundings. Later on, he misses the hint that maybe it’s a bad idea to pick up Akano despite his struggle to lift such a heavy being.
He’s also pretty airheaded. Upon the first face to face encounter he and his sister have with the Alternate Tawna, he's initially more preoccupied with examining the "stranger" in an up-close and too personal manner than paying attention to Coco spelling things out for everyone. Later on, he’s also oblivious toward Coco’s horrified disgust as he gleefully adopts an egg laid by a thoroughly embarrassed and pterodactyl-fied Dr. Nitrus Brio.
Not that he doesn’t listen to his actual spirit guide and father figure, Aku-Aku, but occasionally the old guardian’s droning puts him back to sleep.
And the one thing that Crash loves beyond adventuring, eating wumpa fruit, and performing crazy dance moves is sleep and relaxation at his beachside home. When times are peaceful, it takes some shaking from Coco or yelling from Aku-Aku to get him to do anything productive.
Not that he minds. That he’s all too eager to go one way or the other especially when asked shows how overall relaxed and easygoing this bandicoot is. While adventuring with Coco side-by-side, most of his attention is on her, and he tends to agree with whatever she’s saying.
His agreeability also appears to stem from his willingness to help. His horrible judgment of character aside during the second game of the trilogy, he goes from helping Cortex find power crystals (picking up the smaller gems along the way) to stopping him to helping N. Brio blow up Cortex's satellite.
Another trait of Crash is his pickiness about food. More often than not, he munches on the “wumpa fruits” native to the aptly named "Wumpa Islands." A flashback tape (Wumpa Affinity Test) reveals that he rejected any other food that Cortex tried to introduce to him. Granted, what other food Cortex wanted to feed him isn't specified; it could have been a loaf of bread, gruel made within a test tube, or something in between.
With all this in mind, Crash is eventually at least a little open-minded about his diet. He’s seen licking his lips in satisfaction as Alt. Tawna praises a “snurgle shank” served with pickled wumpa leaves (the bandicoots and hybrid mutant of the party seemingly having ordered the same dish). The game also introduced “bumpa berries” as a new edible collectible.
But given a choice, wumpa fruit is still Crash’s go-to favorite.
However, there’s so much more to Crash than his humorous antics and lack of book smarts. Flashback tapes show VHS recordings of Cortex’s extensive tests in the form of death courses for him to run through. It’s not confirmed if, in-universe, the bandicoot cleanly aced every course because of one offhand line implying the scientists could dump any remains into a “revive-o-tron.” Despite this unknown, going through the tapes shows that his athletic ability and intuitive problem-solving throughout the increasingly tricky courses were more than enough to impress his creator.
The video game concept of extra lives otherwise doesn’t exist, evidence in canon being that the Crash and Coco of Alternate Tawna’s timeline are explicitly said to be deceased. So, surviving four adventures (thus far) is proof that Crash’s skills go far beyond dumb luck.
Even at his most immature, Crash also has a heroic drive to help those he cares about. Whether it’s because he needs to rescue his once-girlfriend Tawna or because Aku-Aku is yelling at him to take action, he gives his all to cleanly put a stop to plots for world or inter-dimensional domination time and time again.
Crash loves his found family. One of his idle animations in the N. Sane trilogy includes initiating a game of catch using a wumpa fruit with Aku-Aku and laughing off being splatted by fruit juice.
The familial level of care between him and Coco is also mutual- shown by how he comforts her after Alternate Tawna’s lone wolf attitude leaves both of them dejected. And he’s not bothered at the beginning of the second game when she’s a bit demanding about sending him off to locate a new laptop battery in the middle of the jungle.
At the same time, Crash doesn’t seem capable of holding a grudge, willing to turn the other cheek with genuine enthusiasm. While at first he and his sister are wary of seeing Dingodile again during It's About Time, he’s quick to accept the old villain’s placating manner and visible change of heart.
It also goes for when Cortex laments about their endless cycle of fighting. Although Crash gives little more than a shrug, as soon as his creator (unconvincingly) implies forging an alliance, the bandicoot promptly embraces him with affectionate nuzzles.
Not-so-deep down, it doesn’t seem to matter to Crash how many times his archenemy has tried to kill him or that he's been backstabbed twice now. Perhaps he’s so forgiving because he’s holding out for another glimmer of the same man that clothed him, forced N. Brio to perfect a wumpa fruit birthday cake, and accidentally admitted to once nursing a fatherly affection for him.
